CTG 0-8, Clonkill 2-18

We made the short journey to Rochfortbridge last Wednesday evening to play Clonkill in the first round of the Intermediate Championship. On a very wet evening, it was evident from the opening few minutes that our opponents were the stronger and more experienced side. They were quicker out of the blocks and hit the net twice in the first half. Although we had the benefit of the strong breeze, we failed to capitalise on it and trailed 2-6 to 0-5 at the interval. We also lost our full forward, Dean, to injury.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Clonkill outscoring us by 12 points to 3 to run out convincing winners. Our young side, with Conor Maloney, David O’Malley, Eoin Carey, Rory Quinn, Aaron Jackson and Shane Maloney all making their adult championship debuts, will no doubt learn from this tough opener and improve in the upcoming rounds. We play Southern Gaels in two weeks’ time in the second round.
