CTG 1-25, Clonkill 2-17

We travelled to Cusack Park last Saturday evening to play Clonkill in the 2nd round of the Championship. We had a bad start to the match and our opponents, with the help of a goal from a 21-yard free, took an early lead. It took us 15 minutes to get into the contest, but we clawed our way back with some great points, and a score just before the interval gave us a one-point lead at half time, 0-12 to 1-8.

The 2nd half followed a similar pattern, with Clonkill adding another goal and a few points to go five points ahead with fifteen minutes remaining. We gradually got back into the game again, and when substitute Ciaran hit the net, we were back level. We had a brilliant last 10 minutes, with points from play from an array of scorers, and we held on for a hard-fought win.

This win, despite being down nearly half of last year’s side through injury, leaves us in a good position with 2 wins from 2, and we play last year’s finalists, Lough Lene Gaels, in Round 3.
